Search Engine Optimization for Beginners
If you are confused about terms like "search engine optimization" or having a "search engine friendly" site, then listen up! I am here to help.

Depending on how long you have had, or considered having, a website online, you have heard terms thrown around like the above or even worse, acronyms! SEO comes to mind.

Really there is not that much to fear even if you have no idea right now what is really meant by having a search engine friendly site.

Here is what search engines like to have in their results when people type in keywords:

A site with lots of content

A site with UNIQUE content (Original - meaning you wrote it or you paid someone to write it for you.)
Sites that are well organized link-wise (meaning simple navigation from the main page of your site to every other page of your site.)
Sites that have links pointing to them from other popular, relevant sites. (sites that are similar in content to yours but that are not in direct competition with yours in content)
Sites that change regularly (not static but always growing with new content on a regular basis)
Sites they can read. (Search engine robots cannot read JavaScript for instance and therefore you get no credit for whatever content is in that application on your site)
Tightly themed sites. It is easier for an engine to rank your site properly (where you want it to be) if you are not all over the map in content.
Exception: Portal sites or directories. But this is an item for another article all together

What About the Complicated Stuff?

There really isn't anything complicated about what the search engines want. But if you have stumbled into a search engine forum you were likely blown away with comments and tips that were completely over your head.

There is a difference between basic, standard optimization and the stuff they talk about in those forums. While visiting SEO forums is good to keep up on new things as you go along, many people get confused and the forums are the breeding grounds for confusion when you are a beginner. Try to learn advanced SEO from noted experts in the field rather than taking anything in chats or forums as gospel. A lot more people THINK they know what they are doing than actually do. Remember that anything someone is willing to give away for free which, if it works, could be worth tens of thousands of dollars in high rankings resulting in high sales, is probably something that is old hat and not effective anymore.

But for now, you have a lot of work to do on the basics. The advanced stuff can come later. Relative to the advanced SEO, getting the basics right is the most powerful move you can make because you are going from zero to moving up in rankings by, many times, tens of thousands of spaces in a relatively short time.

Advanced SEO focuses on moving your site from high rankings slightly higher rankings.

Keywords
Your content is the most important thing about a website. It must be friendly to the search engines meaning no special java script or other stuff. Just good old fashioned HTML. You will do fine with PHP, SHTML, and other things, but for the purpose of this article, HTML is the way most people construct their sites.

You should use a good density of your main keyword phrase for each page of your site within the content. If you are going after a high ranking for the phrase "dog leashes" you need to have that phrase in the title of the page and throughout the content. Nice thing about the software above is that it teaches you search engine optimization while it works on your site. So having it is like having a course on optimization while your site is altered for the best placement in the search engines at the same time.

The main recommendation I have for people starting to deal with optimizing their sites for the engines is to take things one at a time and get the basics down before you start messing with advanced strategies. And when you start down that road, information you pay for is usually more accurate and more valuable than hanging around in forums. High rankings are worth a LOT of money and people don't work hard to become experts just to give that information away.

Good luck and get to work!

One-Way Links
One-way links are just what it says. You get a link without having to give a link back. One-way links count a lot more than swapping links. They appear to be a truer endorsement of your site, an endorsement that says your site must really be good because there was no quid pro quo (i.e. no reciprocation).

Many of you already have the most valuable one-way link on the internet, a listing in the dmoz.org directory (Open Directory Project). The dmoz link provides a highly relevant, on topic, one way link. That is one of the main reasons people pull out their hair over trying to get in there. Another good one is a link from the Yahoo directory but that costs $299. Don't do that one until you have truly optimized your site as you need to try to influence the editor vetted Yahoo description so that it will benefit your rankings. But regardless, the link is a good one. Most other directories have little value.

Reciprocal Links
In the last couple of years webmasters have worked very hard to develop reciprocal links with other sites. The reasoning has been that although one-way links (inbound only) might be more valuable than reciprocal links, they are almost impossible to get, but you can get some inbound links if you offer a link in return.
But the engines are not stupid. Reciprocal links are hardly an indication of the worth of a site. Most reciprocal links are a device to artificially inflate link popularity to exploit this particular search engine ranking factor.
And from the forum moderator at Webmaster World: "The way it is going with everyone hunting for links and the easiest way out being asking for reciprocal links, it would seem that long term, reciprocal links will be worth less than one way links. You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours is ok for sending each other visitors (the original idea of links), but the question is if it will account for the same as a straight one-way link.” Actually, that boat left the dock more than a year ago with reciprocal links being now greatly devalued.

What is Three Way Linking?
You have probably already heard of reciprocal linking, where two websites link to each other for mutual benefit, but what about three way linking?
Three way linking can easily be explained in the example below:
You have three websites - website A, website B and website C.

  • Website A links to website B.
  • Website B links to website C
  • Website C links to website A
As you can see, there is no direct reciprocal link here. Each website is linking to another website, but getting a link back from a different website.

The reason for doing this is because reciprocal links can easily be detected by search engines as “unnatural” links; therefore you won’t get as much benefit from a reciprocal link as you will from a one way link. Doing a three way link exchange makes this look more natural as site A is linking to site B, but getting a link back from site C.

If you decide to use three way linking as a strategy for link building I would recommend only linking to websites that are related to your own website and ensuring that your backlink is coming from a site that is also related. By related, I mean the same theme. So don’t link your home business website to someone’s dieting website.
How do you set up a three way link?

It is easy to set up a three way link if you already have two or more related websites of your own. You can email a webmaster and propose a 3 way link exchange. The disadvantage of this is that it is a manual process and it can be difficult to keep track of your links and be sure that the other webmaster has kept his or her link to your website in place.

Another strategy is to use a three way linking service such as 3 Way Links. This service allows you to automatically set up three way links with other websites. All websites are manually reviewed so you don’t need to worry about linking to bad neighborhoods.

Three way linking is definitely a strategy that you should consider using as part of your overall linking campaign along with other methods such as article distribution, forum posting, directory submission and press releases.
A back link is an inward link to your site that may or may not be reciprocated with an outward link back. If page A links to page B then a back link would be a link which goes from page B back to page A.
For example, consider that they are an interesting article in the web and you need the item to be displayed on your website where the link is linked to your website. Now, their website serves as a link to the article or the URL where the article was originally located.

Check your site with backlinks with any Back Link Checker tool that lets you know the number of sites that have a link to your website or web page. Back links are links in a site or page, which acts as a key factor to determine the ranking of your site. It helps to have a footprint of other sites on the link to your URL.

Importance of backlinks in a Website

The Importance of Backlinks
If you've read anything about or studied Search Engine Optimization, you've come across the term "backlink" at least once. For those of you new to SEO, you may be wondering what a backlink is, and why they are important. Backlinks have become so important to the scope of Search Engine Optimization, that they have become some of the main building blocks to good SEO. In this article, we will explain to you what a backlink is, why they are important, and what you can do to help gain them while avoiding getting into trouble with the Search Engines.
What are "backlinks"? Backlinks are links that are directed towards your website. Also knows as Inbound links (IBL's). The number of backlinks is an indication of the popularity or importance of that website. Backlinks are important for SEO because some search engines, especially Google, will give more credit to websites that have a good number of quality backlinks, and consider those websites more relevant than others in their results pages for a search query.
When search engines calculate the relevance of a site to a keyword, they consider the number of QUALITY inbound links to that site. So we should not be satisfied with merely getting inbound links, it is the quality of the inbound link that matters.
A search engine considers the content of the sites to determine the QUALITY of a link. When inbound links to your site come from other sites, and those sites have content related to your site, these inbound links are considered more relevant to your site. If inbound links are found on sites with unrelated content, they are considered less relevant. The higher the relevance of inbound links, the greater their quality.

For example, if a webmaster has a website about how to rescue orphaned kittens, and received a backlink from another website about kittens, then that would be more relevant in a search engine's assessment than say a link from a site about car racing. The more relevant the site is that is linking back to your website, the better the quality of the backlink.
Search engines want websites to have a level playing field, and look for natural links built slowly over time. While it is fairly easy to manipulate links on a web page to try to achieve a higher ranking, it is a lot harder to influence a search engine with external backlinks from other websites. This is also a reason why backlinks factor in so highly into a search engine's algorithm. Lately, however, a search engine's criteria for quality inbound links has gotten even tougher, thanks to unscrupulous webmasters trying to achieve these inbound links by deceptive or sneaky techniques, such as with hidden links, or automatically generated pages whose sole purpose is to provide inbound links to websites. These pages are called link farms, and they are not only disregarded by search engines, but linking to a link farm could get your site banned entirely.
Another reason to achieve quality backlinks is to entice visitors to come to your website. You can't build a website, and then expect that people will find your website without pointing the way. You will probably have to get the word out there about your site. One way webmasters got the word out used to be through reciprocal linking. Let's talk about reciprocal linking for a moment.
There is much discussion in these last few months about reciprocal linking. In the last Google update, reciprocal links were one of the targets of the search engine's latest filter. Many webmasters had agreed upon reciprocal link exchanges, in order to boost their site's rankings with the sheer number of inbound links. In a link exchange, one webmaster places a link on his website that points to another webmasters website, and vice versa. Many of these links were simply not relevant, and were just discounted. So while the irrelevant inbound link was ignored, the outbound links still got counted, diluting the relevancy score of many websites. This caused a great many websites to drop off the Google map.
We must be careful with our reciprocal links. There is a Google patent in the works that will deal with not only the popularity of the sites being linked to, but also how trustworthy a site is that you link to from your own website. This will mean that you could get into trouble with the search engine just for linking to a bad apple. We could begin preparing for this future change in the search engine algorithm by being choosier with which we exchange links right now. By choosing only relevant sites to link with, and sites that don't have tons of outbound links on a page, or sites that don't practice black-hat SEO techniques, we will have a better chance that our reciprocal links won't be discounted.
Many webmasters have more than one website. Sometimes these websites are related, sometimes they are not. You have to also be careful about interlinking multiple websites on the same IP. If you own seven related websites, then a link to each of those websites on a page could hurt you, as it may look like to a search engine that you are trying to do something fishy. Many webmasters have tried to manipulate backlinks in this way; and too many links to sites with the same IP address is referred to as backlink bombing.
One thing is certain: interlinking sites doesn't help you from a search engine standpoint. The only reason you may want to interlink your sites in the first place might be to provide your visitors with extra resources to visit. In this case, it would probably be okay to provide visitors with a link to another of your websites, but try to keep many instances of linking to the same IP address to a bare minimum. One or two links on a page here and there probably won't hurt you.
There are a few things to consider when beginning your backlink building campaign. It is helpful to keep track of your backlinks, to know which sites are linking back to you, and how the anchor text of the backlink incorporates keywords relating to your site. A tool to help you keep track of your backlinks is the Domain Stats Tool. This tool displays the backlinks of a domain in Google, Yahoo, and MSN. It will also tell you a few other details about your website, like your listings in the Open Directory, or DMOZ, from which Google regards backlinks highly important; Alexa traffic rank, and how many pages from your site that have been indexed, to name just a few.
Another tool to help you with your link building campaign is the Backlink Builder Tool. It is not enough just to have a large number of inbound links pointing to your site. Rather, you need to have a large number of QUALITY inbound links. This tool searches for websites that have a related theme to your website which are likely to add your link to their website. You specify a particular keyword or keyword phrase, and then the tool seeks out related sites for you. This helps to simplify your backlink building efforts by helping you create quality, relevant backlinks to your site, and making the job easier in the process.
There is another way to gain quality backlinks to your site, in addition to related site themes: anchor text. When a link incorporates a keyword into the text of the hyperlink, we call this quality anchor text. A link's anchor text may be one of the under-estimated resources a webmaster has. Instead of using words like "click here" which probably won't relate in any way to your website, using the words "Please visit our tips page for how to nurse an orphaned kitten" is a far better way to utilize a hyperlink. A good tool for helping you find your backlinks and what text is being used to link to your site is the Backlink Anchor Text Analysis Tool. If you find that your site is being linked to from another website, but the anchor text is not being utilized properly, you should request that the website change the anchor text to something incorporating relevant keywords. This will also help boost your quality backlinks score.
Building quality backlinks is extremely important to Search Engine Optimization, and because of their importance, it should be very high on your priority list in your SEO efforts. We hope you have a better understanding of why you need good quality inbound links to your site, and have a handle on a few helpful tools to gain those links.
Using Title Tags to Improve SEO & Website Conversion
Search engine optimization (or SEO) is clearly important in this day and age. An entire industry has arisen around the quest to get to the top of the search engines, with black and white hat SEO witches battling it out to stay in the top five positions.
It sounds like a scene out of dungeons and dragons doesn't it? However it's a serious business when hundreds of thousands of visitors are lost because rankings disappear, which equates to hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue.
In a previous article I discussed how to select keywords to help you to start planning a targeted campaign. When you get to the end of this article I hope you should have a fair understanding of the importance of the HTML Title tag with regard to search engines and far more importantly with regards the humans, the people, the guys and gals that you want to get to your website so that they can buy your goods and services.
Firstly, what is the title tag?
The title tag is an element in the header part of an HTML page denoted by two tags. For instance you might have . That would mean that the title would read (as a link on search engines like Google for instance "Using Title Tags to Improve SEO & Website Conversion". Setting yourself some simple guidelines to help you write your tags is a good idea.
Guidelines are good but not set in stone
There are no hard and fast rules for writing titles but there are some guidelines you might want to follow. W3C (http://www.w3.org/Provider/Style/TITLE.html) say on their website that ideally a title should be 64 characters or less and that titles may be truncated if it's longer than that. Google show 66 characters in their search results listing, Yahoo allow listings up to 120 long. What I would suggest is that you bear these sensible limits in mind when writing the contents of your title tags.
If you need a long title make the first 66 characters Google friendly and use the rest up for Yahoo. In order to learn how to effectively use these 66 characters you should know how titles are used online.
Online uses of titles
1) Titles are used by website resource librarians, directory editors (such as DMOZ), and other webmasters (such as strategic link partners) when they link to your website.
2) The title is displayed in web search results by the vast majority of search engines to help you target and attract your visitors.
3) Nearly all the major search engines use a title tag in order to rank your page. Search engines deem the title one of the most important pieces of information when determining what the content of your website is.
4) The title is displayed in the visitors browser window usually at the top of the viewable part of the browser screen.
Browser screens, search results, editors, why is this important?
Firstly, by carefully crafting your website title you make it more accessible to resource librarians, editors and webmasters. If you have a nice simple title link which they can add to their pages both relevant and understandable they are far more likely to link to your website. If they link to your website using a hyperlinked title relevant to your target audience, you get targeted traffic from simply writing a good title tag. More relevant traffic means much higher conversion.
Secondly if Google or Yahoo crawl your website and find that the title tags you've written are relevant to the page on which they are written it means there is a much greater chance of a good ranking on the engines. A good ranking on the engines for your selected keywords means that you're more likely to be found by your target audience. This again means that you attract the people that you want to your website, the people who are looking to buy your product or service. The title tag becomes your search engine listing. Think of it this way, in a similar way to the classified ad you write for a newspaper, the title tag listing is your online advert, so make it as attractive and relevant as possible to attract the right visitor.
Thirdly, the browser window is affected by the title and it's convenient for the visitor to your page. How many times have you had five or six Internet browser windows open? A good title tag means that a quick scan of these titles shows the reader which page is which. The first couple of words in the title it could be argued for this reason alone are the most important text you will ever write for a web page you want to be read.
In summary
You want your web page to be read by your desired audience. That’s all. Your title tag is the first step toward achieving that goal. Abraham Lincoln once said, "If you have eight hours to chop down a tree, spend 6 hours sharpening your axe." The title tag is your web pages axe; it's the part you should refine so that you get the most from the search engines. Of course there is more to SEO and website conversion than simply the title tag. In the next article we'll discuss the next important point to sharpen, the headline, or rather the tags that should be used in conjunction with titles to be even more search and conversion friendly.

Using Google toolbar features to SEO

Using Google toolbar features to SEO

Like many other useful toolbars out there so is the Google Toolbar. I consider this toolbar must have for any serious search engine optimizer and anyone who searches the internet on a regular basis.

The Google Toolbar has grown significantly in features since inception. It now features several new useful features but the main focus of this article is on those that aid in search engine optimization. So without further ado here’s the Google Toolbar unfolded.

Page Rank

Upon installation of the full Google toolbar you will notice a small bar near the center of it that may or may not be partially filled with a green color as displayed in the diagram below.

This is the Google Page Rank indicator. Pagerank is one of Google’s ways of rating your website and plays a role in the position of your site in their search results. This value is calculated based on several variables including the Pagerank value and the number of sites that link to that page. Sites with a higher page rank tend to have better rankings than other sites if all other things are kept equal. I have personally noticed a significant increase in the search engine placement of our Search Engine Optimization site whenever our Google Pagerank is increased. The Google toolbar enable you to, at a glance, view the Pagerank of your website as well as your competitors’ sites. This helps when looking for sites to engage in with link building as more links coming from sites with a higher Pagerank than yours help to increase your site’s Pagerank. It is also said that when looking for site to link to yours that you should aim for sites with a PR 4 or higher.

A side note

There are times when the Google Toolbar will display your website as having a Pagerank of 0 or even no rank at all. If your site previously had a PR greater than 0 and you notice this, watch it for a while or close your browser and reopen it to check as there are times that this feature seems to be a bit buggy possibly due to updates etc at Google.

Cached Version

When Google spiders your site it records the latest version of your site that it has spidered and this can be viewed using the Google Toolbar by going to the Page Info button and selecting cached version. Your browser must be on the page you would like to see the cached version of at the time you choose to do this.

How can this help you with your SEO campaign?
If you have optimized your website in hopes of increasing your search engine results in Google, this will indicate whether or not Google has updated their database with the new version of your page. If the Googlebot visits your site regularly the cached version of your site will be updated more frequently than otherwise.

Backward Links

The Google Toolbar also has a pretty useful feature that displays all the web pages that link to your web page, which Google counts towards your Pagerank. This information isn’t regularly updated and can’t be expected to take between 1 - 3 months before changes can be seen. Backlinks deal with quality and not quantity. A site with 1000 mediocre backlinks may not have as high a Page Rank as a site with 800 high PR backlinks.

Highlighting

You have the option of adding a highlight feature to your Google Toolbar that highlights all instances of your search term on the web page reached from your search. This can help you see how many times your competitors use specific keywords on their pages and you may modify your SEO campaign accordingly. You may also use this to check your own pages and see if you are or are not using enough of your target keywords on your page for optimum search engine placement.

Besides those features listed above there are also some other cool tools on the Google Toolbar such as:
Popup Blocker: This only works in IE 5.5 or later but is a great addition as we all know that there are many sites on the web that bombard you with popups. Some of these even go as far as almost preventing you from going anywhere else as more and more windows keep popping up. Annoyance factor 10/10.

Google Web Search: You can easily search the web using the Google Search Engine via the Google Toolbar by typing in your search terms in the search box area and then clicking enter or clicking the `Search Web’ button on the toolbar.

Using your blog to get one way links

Blogs are a great tool. They allow you to add new, fresh content to your site. They are also a great way to build readership. Think about all the blogs you read. I'm sure that if you're reading this, you're also likely subscribed to a few or at least check them on a daily to weekly basis. Why? Is it because it is entertaining, informative or both? Blogs have been given a bad name because of splogs.

So, how does all this help you get one way backlinks. Preferrably, you want people to link to you naturally. The best way to do that is to give them something worth linking to. Let's say I was an MS Office guru. My blog might be about relatively unknown tips and tricks on how to use MS office or for creating calenders and spreadsheets. Many people who work with MS office would be interested in that. They may like the tips so much that they list it on their blog or site.

What makes a good blog? Information? Yes! Consistency? Absolutely! However a great blog has to have its own style and flare. A blog that invites its readers to participate in the post is a golden rule. That's almost a guaranteed way to ensure that people will be coming back for more.

If you want to get traffic to your blog, one of the best ways is to leave comments on other blogs. Keep in mind, however, that it has to be done in a smart way. People can always tell when something is spam, so avoid being so obvious. Limit your posts to those blogs that are at least somewhat related to your blog. If a blog is about automobiles and you try to plug your aquarium business, you'll do more harm than good. Go to blogs that are related and take part in the discussion. The more informative and intellectual your comments are, the better chance your post will stay around long enough to be read. That is how you can start to build your readership. If you can convince people what you have to say is worth reading, they will come and read it.

Regardless of what you do to get people to your blog, the proof is always in the pudding. If you can't keep them coming back, all the advertising and work you put into creating traffic will mean nothing.

Social Bookmarking

As social bookmarking has developed and grown in popularity, many social bookmarking services offer web feeds for their lists of bookmarked pages which are commonly organized by tag groups. This enables subscribers to feeds to be made aware of new bookmarks as they are tagged and shared by other users.

By having bookmark buttons displayed, a simple click will automatically forward the user to the relevant website or webpage. Tagging enables users to store the sites they wish to re-visit by using words which they decide for themselves, therefore making retrieval even easier.

By using tagged keywords, search engine optimization companies can effectively use social bookmarking to increase the volumes of traffic to a website. The use of social bookmarking is also used to drive more traffic to a website or webpage as potential and existing visitors to a website can simply bookmark the site without the need for time consuming and somewhat tedious searching of each social bookmarking website.

Each social bookmark also has the potential of being a back link to a website. This will help increase traffic to the site and enable search engine spiders to crawl and indexed the site more often. When social bookmarking services such as the popular Deli.ci.ous are used, the tagged and saved websites can then be seen by other users who have the opportunity to click through to the site or webpage that has been tagged by others. This increases the amount of users who are able to see webpage’s that are of particular interest without having to carry out extensive searches themselves. Likewise, webpage’s that others have tagged and saved on public social bookmarking websites are shown immediately the moment a new tag is added. This is how bookmarking becomes ’social’ rather than just having private bookmarks saved on individual browsers.

Extra features such as the ability to import and export bookmarks from browsers, emailing bookmarks, web annotation and social networking sites have further increased the use of social bookmarking as a website marketing tool which is used in conjunction with search engine optimisation to make a website more visible. Te more frequently a webpage is bookmarked the greater the chances it has of being found. Using social bookmarking websites as a internet marketing tool also provides the opportunity to find out how many times a webpage has been bookmarked by users on particular social bookmarking websites.

Social bookmarking has a distinct advantage over more traditional resource locators such as search engine spiders as all tag-based classification of Internet resources is performed by people who understand the content of the resource as opposed to software which algorithmically tries to determine the meaning of the resource. Users also have the ability to locate and bookmark webpage’s which have not yet been indexed or noticed by search engine spiders.

Social bookmarking is the term given to a method of storing and managing websites and webpage’s by a user saving links to their preferred websites which they want to locate easily or share with others.

Importance of Search Engine Optimization for your Online Business

Did you know that about 90 percent of all web site traffic is generated by search engines? Yes, it is true! Listing near the top page of search engines and obtaining the attention of your target audience should be a main priority for any web site Search Engine promotion.

Ethical Search Engine Optimization is of long-term benefit and a well written website will considerably increase the ROI (return on investment). Well known search engines in online market world like Google, Yahoo and MSN rank websites according to their complex algorithms, which are designed to conclude which websites are most relevant for particular search terms.

As we discussed earlier about SEO, we move a bit further about SEO Services and its importance on Online Market. Search Engine Optimization - SEO includes a number of different factors. Some of the most important factors in the equation include keyword density, Meta Tags, Link Popularity or Link Building, Article Syndication, PPC and SEOand relevant content.

The first step in Search Engine Optimization is keyword research and density refers to the number of times a particular keyword is used in the content of your website. Secondly, Meta Tags are part of HTML code which search engines use in evaluating the content of a website. Generally Meta tags are Title Tag, Description Tag, Keyword Tag, etc. Putting important keywords in these tags can be positive in search engine ranking.

Links to site are as important as "backbone" to human being! So in this way, Link Popularity is also considered important for search engines to rank websites. Inbound links refer to links on other websites which point to your website. This means you should ensure the website providing inbound links to your website are high ranking websites to receive the most benefit from these links.

Finally and the most important factor is CONTENT. Content of your website can boost up your search engine rankings in major search engines. DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A WEB DESIGNER AND A SEO

Most of the people think that website designing and search engine optimization is the same thing. But you must know that these two are completely different things. As far as website designer is concerned it basically deals with designing a beautiful website. However as far as SEO is concerned it basically means online marketing. The SEO is the technique of improving the volume and quality of traffic so that more searcher visit the site and also the website should come at the top of the search engine list.

This is really something which requires some kind of optimization. SEO requires optimization in content and also optimization in HTML code so that the website comes first in the search engine search list. As far as web designing is concerned, if you are one of them then you will be just required to design the templates for the web page and also finally design the whole website so that it looks great. However at this level there is no provision that you have to take some step for optimization. This is really not the work of web designer. If you ask the same company to optimize your website then they will ask their SEO whom they hire to do the job. The web designers will have nothing to do with it.

The SEO take into consideration, that how search engine works and what the people are looking for. You will have some keywords which will related to the most common type of searches and also according to the type, your website is. You can use those keywords repeatedly in your contents and you will definitely soon find out that your website comes in the top of the search list.

You will have to keep in mind that what the people are really looking for. Accordingly you will have to change your content. You will see that more traffic will come to your website and you will definitely find yourself to be very popular within few days. But you really require a person who will do the optimization for you. He is called search engine optimization. You will definitely find it much better if you will go for the search engine optimization. You should keep in mind that there are millions of websites and you will find that most of the people see only the first or second page of the search list. Hence if you will not o for search engine optimization then your website will never be visited by anybody. Yes advertisement will work but they are much more costly than SEO. You should really take advantage of SEO. However as far as website design is concerned it is too very important but is different from the SEO as I have explained you.
